Animation is like all forms of art, whether it be graphic design, web design sculpting or even video editing to some degree. The nice thing about getting into art is that whatever avenue you start with it will lend itself well to the next faction of art you want to pursue, this is why many schools start teaching students with traditional drawing skills and then learn similar skills like painting and sculpting. Things like understanding principles of art and anatomy help us improve our perception and drawing is really just a way of perceiving what we are seeing.
Artists are always taught to learn the basics including things like anatomy and some extent realism. We must first learn about proper anatomy so that we can then use that knowledge to create original characters that break that realism. Even though many cartoon characters act in ways that people never can they still keep some sense of realism, this helps us as viewers connect and understand the character.
